The 2024 Olympic Golf Recap

Guyancourt, France – It was a wild finish at Le Golf National as Scottie Scheffler brings home the gold medal for USA.  Tommy Fleetwood finished second with a silver medal while Hideki Matsuyama finished third for the bronze.

This week, the PGA Tour took a week off prior to beginning of playoffs for the Olympics which saw quite a few of the top players competing for gold.  While many argued that the individual stroke play format is a bit dull and could use some tweaking, a few players were competing for more than just a medal.

South Korean golfers Tom Kim and Ben A both would gain exemptions from serving a required military stint in Korea if they were to medal at the Olympics.  While neither medaled, both came very close.  Kim finished in eighth while Ben An finished in a tie for 24th place.  Both players have several other opportunities to medal including the next Olympics in Los Angeles before having to serve.

The site of the 2023 Ryder Cup made for some exciting drama coming down the stretch for the leaders.  Much of the final round was led by Jon Rahm who ran into problems on the back nine.  He made bogeys on 11 and 12 with a double on the par five 14th.  He was unable to recover and missed the podium by two strokes.

Once Rahm dropped back, Scottie Scheffler and Tommy Fleetwood both dueled it out.  Scottie made nine birdies in his final round with a very tricky two putt par on his 72nd to keep him at 19 under for the tournament.  Tommy was only a few holes behind and tied for the lead when he made a costly bogey on 17 to drop him back to 18 under and into solo second place.

This is Scottie’s first Olympic medal and gives the US yet another gold medal.  Next week, the PGA Tour resumes with the Wyndham Championship.
