The TaylorMade Qi10 fairway wood is a balanced long game tool that has something for every player and situation. Excellent ball speed and forgiveness.
Introduction
It’s assumed by most golfers that the “Tour” model of a given club is the one that’s used most frequently among the pros. That’s not the case with TaylorMade’s fairway woods. From the recreational players to those at the very top of the game, the core model, the TaylorMade Qi10 fairway wood, is the one that finds its way into the most bags. I’ll explain why in this review.
Looks
As a golfer who came of age in the early 2000’s, seeing anything but red on a TaylorMade club is a bit weird. That aside, I think TM did a great job with the look of this club. The sole of the TaylorMade Qi10 fairway wood is almost entirely black and grey with the “Qi” popping out in white. Gold dots the “i” and two small slashes of blue highlight the V Steel sole.
At address, the Qi10 is a little larger than the Qi10 Tour [review HERE] in every dimension. The face is taller, and it’s longer from heel to toe and front to back, all by about 1/8″. The additional face height is unusual – we typically see the Tour model have the tallest face – but I think it gives this club a standout look. This model does sit a little shut at address, but it has a balanced, near-symmetrical shape.
Sound & Feel
Some OEMs ditch the strong, solid feel in their “everyman” clubs, but not TaylorMade. They’ve set the bar on feel in the last few years, and that’s still true with the TaylorMade Qi10 fairway wood. This club feels extremely solid all across the face. Centered shots have a little more pop, encouraging you to strike it there more often.
The impact sound of this fairway wood is quick and snappy. Just as with the feel, that sound is pretty consistent across the face, but there is a little more reward on center. The volume is average – just loud enough to warn the group ahead to clear the green a little quicker.
Performance
Why is it that Tour pros and recreational golfers all flock to the same club? Balance. The TaylorMade Qi10 fairway wood does everything well.
When we’re talking about a club that has to substitute for the driver and also get us home on par 5s, length is the first criteria. The Qi10 FW has it. Ball speed on center is excellent, among the fastest you’ll find. Those centered shots receive mid launch and spin which makes this club a fit for the majority of players.
The next key element is consistency. I saw that in the spin, launch, and ball speed of the TaylorMade Qi10 fairway wood. Across the face, ball speed stays high enough to produce long shots. Just as importantly, the launch and spin don’t fluctuate wildly. From thin shots to pure strikes, my spin was always in the low 3000s. Similarly, my shots found a mid trajectory whether I hit them perfectly or not. All that creates predictable distances, a key to good strategy.
Finally, the Qi10 FW is versatile. The face is a little taller which makes it an attractive option off the tee, but it’s not so tall that you can’t elevate shots from the turf. Skilled FW players will be able to take that mid-trajectory and raise or lower it on command. I noted a small draw bias, but I was able to hit straight shots and cuts, and I’m by no means a high level FW player.
Conclusion
If you’re the type of player that asks a lot from their fairway wood, the TaylorMade Qi10 is a great choice. This is a do-it-all club that has plenty of distance and works as well from the tee as the turf. Whether you’re on Tour or not, add this to the list the next time you’re being fit for a fairway wood.
