2024 The Open Championship Recap

Xander Schauffele is Champion Golfer of the Year

Troon, Scotland – Xander Schauffele (-9) won the 2024 Open Championship, earning his second major of the year and his career.  Schauffele entered the day one stroke behind leader Billy Horschel and put up an impressive 65 to pull away and win by two over Horschel and Justin Rose.  South African Thriston Lawrence finished one stroke behind them in solo fourth while Russell Henley finished one back of him in solo fifth.

Schauffele has quickly gone from “best golfer without a major” to two-time major winner and halfway to the career grand slam and has placed himself firmly in the conversation for best golfer in the world. His versatility to win on courses as different as Valhalla and Royal Troon is very impressive, not to mention with the pressure of a major championship.

The golf course became much more playable on the weekend after a brutal first two rounds of weather and course conditions.  The golf was far from what PGA Tour players experience during a typical week on tour.  Indeed, some of the field’s favorites and notable names failed to make the cut.

Among the favorites to miss were Bryson DeChambeau, Ludvig Aberg, Tommy Fleetwood, Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland, Cameron Smith, and Rory McIlroy.  McIlroy in particular was a favorite for many this week and must be disappointed after missing the cut by five strokes.

Players who had positive weeks included Jon Rahm, who hung around and earned himself a top 10 finish, T7 at -1 alongside world number one Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im; 2022 Open Champion Shane Lowry, who finished solo sixth after leading at the 36 hole mark and having a disappointing third round.

Next week, the PGA Tour returns to the states for the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities.  Lee Hodges is the defending champion and will compete against a field that includes Akshay Bhatia, Sam Burns, Tony Finau, and Sahith Theegala.
