Introduction
The Shot Scope V3 is, in my opinion, the best shot tracker on the market. And while the Plugged In Golf readership loves to argue, I haven’t found many who disagree with me on that. The only complaint I’ve ever gotten about V3 is from people who don’t want to wear a watch while they golf. Now you don’t have to. Set Up & Ease of Use
When you unbox the Shot Scope H4, you’ll find the device, carrying clip, charging cable, and club tags. Start by plugging the H4 into a USB port to give it a full charge. From there, download the Shot Scope app and pair your H4 to your phone. You’ll likely get a firmware update, then you’ll be good to go. Beyond the charging, all this takes only a couple minutes to complete.
While your H4 is charging, you can put the tags in the grips of your clubs. One of my favorite things about the Shot Scope system is that each tag is labeled, so you don’t need to pair the tags with your device or your phone. Simply screw the “9i” tag into your 9 iron, and you’re good to go. The tags are very small and light – you won’t even notice them once they’re installed.
There are four buttons on the H4, and each one’s function is always clearly labeled. When you get to the course, turn on the H4, select “Play Golf,” and the course should be automatically recognized. Press the button to start your round, and the H4 will provide your front, middle, and back yardages without any further input. With a couple button pushes, you can also get the yardage to hazards and layup areas on each hole.
Accuracy & Performance
The function of the Shot Scope H4 is identical to the Shot Scope V3. If you want all the details on the system, check out the review HERE. For this review, I’ll just hit the highlights. First, over 35,000 courses are preloaded, so the course you’re playing is almost definitely in the system. If it’s not, email Shot Scope and they’ll add it, usually with 48 hours. The accuracy is outstanding, the display is easy to read, and the shot tracking provides a highly detailed picture of your game. Finally, the Shot Scope app and data dashboard are excellent. If you want a quick understanding of your game, that’s easy to get. You can also deep dive into specific aspects of each club or segment of your game.
Now, let’s move on to the differences between H4 and V3. Because V3 is on your wrist, it automatically knows what club you’re using and where you’re at when you swing. If you want the most seamless shot tracking experience, V3 is it.
H4 requires a little more user input. Before or after each shot, you need to tap the club tag to the H4. The H4 will give a subtle vibration and display the club to let you know that the shot has been registered. You can wear the H4 on your belt with the included belt clip, attach it to your bag, or stick it on your cart. I found the belt clip to be the most convenient location, and it provides the best accuracy for shot tracking.
Value
The Shot Scope H4 GPS retails for $149. This is $30 less than the Shot Scope V3, so if you want to get into shot tracking as inexpensively as possible, this is it.
It’s also worth noting that Shot Scope has no annual fee. The annual fee for a comparable system is $99 – not to mention the cost of the system itself. Shot Scope H4 is the best value in shot tracking.

Great article. I think I would use this over range finders and watches. I like simple and this looks as simple as can be. When will they hit the market? Is it available now?

How are putts recorded? Do you touch the unit once or before each putt? Do you still have to manually enter the number of putts?
I borrowed my son’s V2 and couldn’t remember to record the number of putts. I was thinking about that to the point it was distracting. I stopped using it after 5 holes. My son stopped using it for the same reason.

You tap the unit with the putter tag before or after each putt, just like any other shot. You can mark the pin location by standing next to the hole and pushing the button that indicates your number of putts, but it’s not required.

With my 3,tracki g putts is probably the hardest thing to remember so I tend to not get those counted correctly. What I use it for mainly is to track my club distances in more detail to make sure that I am hitting the correct club.
The V3 comes in handy on my wrist when I am not near my cart and don’t gave my range finder, or maybe I amon a cart path only hole and hit my ball as far as possible from the path. Occasionally the V3 doesn’t pick up my full shots, not sure why. The original band latch fell off and was lost, but ShotScope replaced it with a new design at no additional cost and solved the problem.
Hi Matt, I’m a big fan of the site. I play with Geom Moe irons, and typically use 8-9 clubs. Do you think less clubs would cause any issues with tracking shots?
Not at all, you’ll just use fewer tags. I track when I play with my GEOM irons.

I tag mine the way that I think about them. The Moe irons’ lofts line up with the evens for my Blueprints, so I tag them as such.

Hi Matt, I have been using the V2 since it came out, then upgraded to the V3 whennthat came out. I strongly recommend the V3. It does require reading the directions, but once you’ve used it a few times you don’t even think about it. The recording of putts can be a little tricky, so I still use a paper scorecard to double check my data at the end of a round. It’s a great buy.
It seems like it would be a bit annoying to tap every club every time. Am I wrong ? I currently use arccos and do not have to do that. But it does sound like great product.

I would prefer not to tap, which is why I use the Shot Scope V3 where tapping is not required. That said, tapping is not a huge cost for the mountains of information that shot tracking provides.

I just got the V3 recently and could not be happier ! I’ve been aware of it, and had planned on purchasing the H4 when it was released, but Shot Scope offered me a bargain that I couldn’t pass up. In hindsight, I am glad I went with the watch. Great article that summarizes the products well. Had previously used a handheld unit I kept in my pocket at all times, but now with the watch, I don’t have to dig anything out, and there’s enough in my pockets all ready.
So far, Shot Scope service has been incredibly responsive and good. Emailed support and received response within a day with additional follow up quickly. I’d also like to emphasize that there is no additional or annual fees. Been offered a “free” trial with Arcos a couple times, but that’s really only for 2 or 3 months and then you have to start paying.
Highly, highly recommend Shot Scope !
Worth noting that the other shot tracking system that has a fee has went up… $155/yr now! Buying a shotscope yearly. It’s crazy.
FYI – Was just on their site. There’s now the Pro LX+ which combines the Pro LX rangefinder and the H4 (it has a magnet and sits on the Pro LX). $349. That is an interesting combo, may have to pull the trigger.

Just a quick question on the H4. Does the device recognize the difference between a practice swing and actual shot? Would be annoying if you have to practice swing first, and then tap the club, as it would upset my rhythm…

Yes, it’s very intelligent. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it record two swings from the same location.

If I decide to leave the H4 on my golf bag but on some tee decks we grab the club and leave our bag on the cart path, I’d assume this would mess up the shot tracking as I’m far from the unit itself? Does the H4 have to be right next to you at all times to ensure proper tracking? If this is the case, it seems like the belt loop option would be by far the most accurate and logical.

If you want the most accurate data, you need to have the H4 in the location the shot is hit when you “tag” the shot.

as a beginning golfer, i’m trying to “dial in” all my clubs as far as accuracy and distances. would the H4 be beneficial at the driving range to help me with figuring out average distances on each club?

Great article, thanks. Like others I’m concerned at the constant tapping to log a shot (& will no doubt forget!). If you wear the H4 on your belt buckle (or near as), will this effectively become the tap when you play your shot? As the tag at top of club will be very near device in this case.

I haven’t experimented with getting the club close but not physically touching the device, so I can’t give you a definitive answer. I think my advice would be, if you don’t want to tag, go for the ShotScope V3.

Ive been looking for another shot tracker since Game Golf abandoned their GG Live device.
I’ve been reading what I can about Shot Scope H4 and if I didn’t know better I’d almost say SSH4 & GGL are one of the same.
How would you compare Shot Scope H4 to Game Golf Live?

It’s been a very long time since I used Game Golf, so my ability to compare the two is limited. If you’re already in the habit of tagging, I think the H4 would be an easy transition, and I think Shot Scope’s depth of data beats anyone else in this space.
