Introduction

I had the pleasure of learning about the Biom Hybrid 3 GTX from ECCO’s Product Manager, Thomas Dixon.  What appears to be an evolution of the proven Biom line actually involves a tremendous amount of design enhancements.  Every aspect of the shoe has purpose and meaning, as I’ll attempt to point out in the sections below.  If you’re not going to read any further let me go ahead and tell you – this is one heck of a golf shoe.

Looks

The ECCO Biom Hybrid 3 GTX has a clean, simple appearance on the foot in the four basic colorways. For a more modern flair, there are two versions with silvery patterns in the main body of the shoe that I still wouldn’t consider flashy.  A casual observer wouldn’t identify my concrete/scarlet pair as golf shoes and might even mistake them for hiking shoes.

Branding is minimal, yet every feature is subtly highlighted somewhere on the shoe.  The heathered fabric around the ankle coordinates nicely with the dark leather trim and makes a pleasant contrast to both the shoe body and midsole.  The sole may be designed for performance, but it leaves a really cool pattern in the sand.

Comfort

Right out of the box, the ECCO Biom Hybrid 3 GTX is extremely comfortable.  The yak leather uppers are soft and supple.  I learned that yak hide is extremely strong and can be shaved thinner, making it lightweight, durable, and breathable.

I found the shoes very comfortable to walk in, with a good balance of support and flexibility. In my golf stance, I could instantly tell my heels were slightly lower than ‘normal’.  As someone who tends to have too much weight on the balls of my feet, the lower heel is a real plus for my swing balance.  ECCO hails both of these attributes as part of their Biom Natural Motion technology.

Performance

The ECCO Biom Hybrid 3 GTX maintains a strong bridge to the ground throughout the golf swing.  Something I never gave thought to – until I saw “Rotation Line” embossed on the sole – was rotation along the toe of a shoe.  It’s something all golfers do with proper footwork, and ECCO designed the toe to enhance that action.

For a non-cleated shoe, the ECCO Biom Hybrid 3 GTX has impressive traction.  In several rounds of golf, I never encountered a condition where the shoe fell short of a cleated version.  Not only does the outsole design, which staggers and varies the spacing of the high points, perform in varied conditions, it also doesn’t clog or snag leaves.  All that and Gore-Tex lining to ensure your feet stay dry.

Conclusion

So many non-cleated golf shoes have aggressive soles that don’t lend themselves to wearing off the golf course. With the ECCO Biom Hybrid 3 GTX, I can put them on before leaving the house and feel totally comfortable stopping for groceries on the way home – all without sacrificing performance on the golf course.  I never wore a pair of the previous generation Biom, but I’m sure impressed with these.
