The Boxto Legacy Hybrid Love spikeless golf shoes offer a modern take on a classic style. Wonderful craftsmanship and high-end materials. Comfortable but on the heavier side.
Introduction
Boxto hit my radar watching Kurt Kitayama chalk up his first PGA Tour win at Bay Hill last year. As a golf shoe junkie who prides himself on spotting shoes during television coverage, I was initially stumped. With the help of my best friend Google, I learned about the Boxto Legacy Freedom Pro shoes he was wearing and about the brand itself. Witnessing the buzz of activity around the Boxto booth at the recent PGA Show, I knew it was time to bring Boxto to the PIG readers. I present the Boxto Legacy Hybrid Love.
Looks
It’s hard to envision a better blend of classic and modern styles. The white leather uppers feature classic wingtip elements that exude a sophisticated elegance. The light blue outsoles and sculpted heels tip the scales to more modern times. White welt stitching perfectly brings the two styles together.
Turning to the soles, one word comes to mind – waffles. Boxto made the pattern distinctive using charcoal grey as the backdrop to the lugs. The signature Boxto “X” on each lug adds to the eye catching look.
The Legacy Hybrid Love shoes also come in black, brown, and navy blue. The Love is one of three distinctive Legacy Hybrid models – each with their own flair [check them out via the link at the end of this review].
Comfort
Slipping on the Boxto Legacy Hybrid Love the first time, I found the fit a bit snug and stiff in the forefoot – just what I expected from a full leather upper shoe. Around my heel the fit was a bit loose and concerning. After about 15 minutes of chipping practice, any concerns I had about comfort evaporated. My heels felt secure, and the shoes seemed to mold around my feet. My feet were so comfortable that I didn’t hesitate to move over to the range for a full practice session, followed by eighteen holes a couple of days later.
Boxto utilizes a calf skin lining to elevate the comfort and provide what I’d call a premium feel. Underfoot, the Boxto Legacy Hybrid Love have a double layer of memory foam which I found more supportive than pillowy. My only negative on the comfort scale was the weight of the shoe, which is on the heavier side. For comparison on a single size 9.5 shoe, the Boxto weighed 19.2 oz., where the new G/FORE Gallivan2R [full review HERE] are 14.7 oz., and Adidas Tour 360 ’24 [full review soon] are 16.5 oz. Depending on where you play and fitness level, those ounces can add to fatigue at the end of a long day.
Performance
Continuing with the shoe weight, I liked feeling grounded during the swing. It was most noteworthy in my trail heel and aided in my effort to rotate and not lunge forward. I’d also attribute the stability to what Boxto describes as “comfort filler with a suspension shank.”
Traction wise, the deep waffle pattern lugs proved good on all the surfaces I encountered – short fairway grass, long rough, and various sand compactions. I haven’t had the shoes long enough to evaluate wear myself, but the Legacy Hybrids do feature high abrasion thermoplastics.
One additional design element that the weather hasn’t allowed me to fully evaluate is the shoe’s “special moisture control breathable mesh technology” that ensures your feet “will stay cool and fresh no matter how many rounds you get in!”
Conclusion
Boxto is an interesting new brand. Their vision is “To be recognized as a leading high-end company in the design, development and manufacture of golf footwear, clothing and accessories…” which are lofty goals. Nonetheless, the Boxto Legacy Hybrid Love golf shoes are certainly high-end in both looks and materials – and in price at $239. Kitayama didn’t repeat at Bay Hill this year, but I do expect to see more of Boxto with 2024 Presidents Cup captain Jim Furyk, and LPGA star Charley Hull as other brand ambassadors.
